Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hostpital Renovations

The egress correction project is a unique effort in making existing historical buildings at the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital both accessible and in compliance with latest requirements of the National Fire Protection Association.

The challenge of this project was to maintain the University of Virginia-like character of the buildings, with the installation of new two-story stair towers in an open air space. The openness of the stairs and their link with the other buildings has encouraged people to use them as points of circulation and social meeting areas.

The concrete columns covers enclose steel framing supporting steel pitched roofs with slate shingles and copper gutters, embedded downspouts and flashing. The project was set aside for a minority business contractor and was negotiated with the SBA. This project was finished within the estimated time and budget of $1,300,000.
