Main Post Office The building and site concept were developed with the input of the local community. Many designs were considered and the final design adopted the style of the train station in the center of the town. This design encourages people to congregate, sit around a small outdoor plaza, and use the post office as a vital town center. Inside the post office is an open area designated for the sale of postage stamps and also an area designated for people to prepare and package their own materials. The majority of the building houses a work room where mail operations are conducted. The main structure is topped by a cupola that allows natural light to flow into the building. The color scheme and minima use of artificial lighting are in keeping with an architectural style typical of this area of New York. Natural surroundings and new plants provide a pleasant setting for the building. The site for this 8,600 sf building was chosen to provide easy access for customers as well as postal service vehicles. The front of the building faces Route 212, while the shipping and receiving area was constructed at a 45-degree angle allowing for maneuvering and parking. The entire structure is clapboard-sided with asphalt roof shingles. The roof is made of pre-engineered trusses with brackets supporting the eaves around the entire building. The project was finished within the original project budget and time schedule. |
