Bergen Station South
Jersey City, New Jersey

ARCADD has developed construction and engineering systems and produced contract documents for Bergen Station South Post Office in Jersey City, NJ. The building is nearly completed and will be finished within the estimated time and budget. The building is divided into front lobby functions, administration, work room, loading dock, and support spaces. The lobby includes a retail area with stamp displays and a retail counter. There are also service counters, a quick-post area with self-help supplies and equipment, and a postal box lobby. The design includes natural lobby lighting while highlighting the retail display area with special illumination. The concept is achieved through the use of glass block exterior walls combined with soffit lighting fixtures. The work room is situated in the rear of the lobby areas with access to the administrative offices, support offices, and loading dock. Its design involved the use of indirect lighting with lighting fixtures located on top of round HVAC ducts.

The loading dock is covered and protected against the outside elements. It is equipped with dock levelers and lifts to allow different truck and postal vehicle sizes.

The building structure is simple metal post and beam with bar joists and metal decking for the roof. The exterior column and beam cover is made of aluminum. The HVAC system is based on the design of a roof top unit located on the ground outside the building. A sprinkler system was placed throughout the entire structure.

The Bergen Post Office is located in the Martin Luther King financial development in Jersey City, New Jersey. The building and its parking spaces were designed in such a way as to avoid altering current storm drainage and water flow. While this saves the U.S.P.S. construction costs, it also alleviates traffic during construction. The traffic pattern on site was separated allowing public access to the lobby areas and trunk service access to the loading dock area. Extensive landscaping and wild flower mixes were used to beautify the site and enhance the area.
