Swiss Pavilion, World Expo 2010
Shanghai , China

The concept of the Swiss Pavilion is based on one of the most internationally recognized symbols of utility and versatility – the Swiss Army knife. Within a compact form fans a variety of tools for any application. Like this iconic image, the compact form of the pavilion also opens up in a number of varying stainless steel blades bridging over the entire building. The stainless structure creates the utility to define the space needed to suspend various exhibits, and becomes a part of the exterior walking experience.

The exterior concourse rises naturally from the ground to various heights allowing for outdoor exhibits, and then returns to the ground as part of a welcoming and meandering pedestrian experience. The exterior concourse shelters the indoor program spaces, which include shops, exhibition galleries, a movie theater, VIP area, and restaurant. The front reflecting pool, which doubles as a cooling tower for the air conditioning of the building, flanks the approach to one of two primary pavilion entrances.

The colors of the pavilion are primarily red and white, with a silver colored light reflective stainless steel exhibit structure above.
