Tier One Renovations: Bowen, Williams and Memorial Spaulding Elementary Schools

In 1997, ARCADD was commissioned by
the Newton Public Schools to reissue three feasibility studies for renovations and additions to three elementary schools:
Bowen, Memorial Spaulding and Williams.
The studies included evaluation of population projections, satisfactory compliance with the educational specifications set forth by the Massachusetts Department of Education, evaluation of the existing building for life safety systems and ADA code compliance, space deficiencies and potential
for expansion.

All three schools were found to be lacking in adequate classroom and faculty space, and in need of major renovations to meet code requirements for the DOE as well as the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. A final report of these findings was presented to City of Newton and School Board officials. Upon review of this report ARCADD continued design into the working drawings and construction documents phase of the project.

ARCADD met on a consistent basis with School Dept. officials and school staff to determine how to best meet the needs of each of the three elementary schools. The renovation for all three schools includes; kindergarten facilities, classrooms, teacherÕs room, administrative suite, nurseÕs office, music rooms, art rooms, tutorial space (ESL, SPED),storage, upgrades for doors, hallways and restrooms, technology infrastructure and implementation, school library/media centers, site circulation, parking, bus drop-off areas, etc. ARCADD also completed renovations for the auditorium Williams. Additions included libraries and media centers for each school.

ARCADD completed the Bowen Elementary School on time and under budget. The Williams Elementary School is currently on time and under budget. The Memorial-Spaulding Elementary School is currently
being bid.
